CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Rawls was a good sport, even on his bad days. He wasn’t the mindless drone that Boom was, following every order given him as if his life depended on it. Rawls had too much intelligence to never question orders. That didn’t mean he didn’t do what he was told. To the contrary, he was a stickler for getting the job done to the best of his abilities. What he didn’t appreciate was others failing to recognize that he did things his way, if not always at his own pace. In other words, he had style.

Being an engineer required a certain appreciation of the way things worked, not the least of which was his own inherent facility for carrying out tasks. It wasn’t about being flashy or drawing attention to himself. Rather, his entire process of working depended as much on how he did things as it did seeing it through to completion. He wasn’t the lowly tinkerer that Bishop was or a technophile like Gomez. He was an engineer—and that meant thinking out of the box. Rawls wasn’t interested in just coming up with creative solutions to the technical problems he dealt with on a daily basis. He wanted to leave his personal stamp on things.

By every measure, the Lilith should have been put out of her misery a long time ago and sent to a scrapyard for irreparable ships. But every day he had to think up new ways to keep her working. It wasn’t an easy task. In fact, he sometimes questioned his intelligence for staying on the job for as long as he had. Lily, as he called her, never ran out of ways to remind him of the pointlessness of it all. But pain in the rear end that she was, he’d keep her ticking away until Drake found the good sense to finally decommission her or she fell to pieces, whichever came first.

It was days like this he realized it would all come to an end soon enough. Except for the fact that Drake still owed him money for services rendered, he might have bailed on the crew already. The only thing that made staying on board worth it was knowing he’d have one more chance to seduce Rhodes. So far, it had proved to be impossible. But as an engineer, he didn’t believe in impossibilities, only finding solutions to existing problems. He’d gone too long without taking a female to his bed and was going to find a way to get Rhodes to ride his mule or consider becoming a monk.

All’s fair in love and war, he thought. Rhodes hadn’t shown any interest in having a romantic tryst. But he knew deep down—very deep down—she wanted to screw his brains out. How could she feel otherwise? He was the stuff every woman dreamed of, even if, like Rhodes, they hadn’t yet reconciled their repressed feelings with the opposite sex. Regardless of whether or not Rhodes was uninterested in the male species or simply
